Tropical Steel Vibes is an Atlanta-based group comprised of musicians from various parts of the Caribbean, Trinidad, St Croix and Puerto Rico, performing reggae, calypso and other Island-flavored music featuring The virtuoso, Claude Fabien on the steel drums.
Claude Fabien left his homeland Trinidad in 1962, touring with the Dance group "The Camboulay Dancers." They toured the Caribbean with "The Mighty Sparrow" and ended up in the Virgin Islands where Claude stayed, dancing Limbo at all the major hotels on the islands. It was there he met Othello Molineaux playing Tenor Pan at the Hilton. The two became friends and from Othello Fabien learned to play the Double Seconds. They formed a group called "But Eventually," and did a one-year stint on two cruise ships. Fabien ended up in Atlanta in 1973.
The group plays soft background music during the dinner set, then you know it is party time when Fabien pulls out those limbo sticks and issues the challenge: "Limbo! Limbo like me!"
Leaping and twirling in a stunning dance, he goes out into the crowd summoning one and all: "How low can you go?" And as the dancers join Fabien onstage for the Limbo Contest, the crowd goes wild.
Tropical Steel Vibes has performed at resort hotels and festivals in Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Jekyll Island, Miami, and Birmingham, Alabama. They opened for Jimmy Buffett at the Lakewood Amphitheater during his national tour stop in Atlanta, played for many special events during the 1996 Olympic Games and the band is always a crowd favorite at the Atlanta Music Festival during Labor Day.
